“In business we have spent many happy times together. I particularly remember great evenings at Toy Fairs in London, Nuremberg and New York.”

“John and Ingrid have been very kind and thoughtful to me over the years - I consider them among my small group of good friends.”

“I’ll never forget when I first met him. He was this slow moving white haired man who talked in a funny accent. He brought his funny little plane made from an old ginger ale bottle and fish’n’chip wings to us, to have a look at. Peter would talk a lot, and then John would simply say “Right. Now let’s have an option or we’re going to show it to everyone else.

In 1997, John said, “This plane is going to make your company.” While I didn’t think much of it at the time, he was right. It did. Today, Air Hogs is the premier brand of planes for children and adults alike and is sold all over the world. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we would not be where we are today without his and Peter’s efforts. He wasn’t as prophetic about the contract. It had more holes than a piece of swiss cheese! : ) But contracts are only for people who can’t work things out rationally and practically. Every time we had an issue, John tackled it with integrity and fairness. He has set a wonderful example for Spin Master and myself.

We’re very proud and honoured to be one of John’s many legacies.

We wish nothing more for him than to continue tearing up the French roads in his Ferrari for many years to come!”

Jivin’ at the Red Blazer
“New York Toy Fair - 1989 or thereabouts - and a group of us went out to eat at the Red Blazer II, which had lousy food but wonderful New Orleans jazz. “Dance?” said John, and the next thing I knew we were co-ordinating our movin’ and groovin’ as if we had danced together all our lives. Were we psychic, perhaps? No. A little delving revealed that we had grown up within half a mile of each other in West London, so we must both have spent our early years perfecting the Raynes Park Jive. Every year after that we found somewhere in New York to eat that had music for afters, so that we could practise our  moves. As we got older and drunker I tended to spin out of control and fall into the band, but we carried on regardless. Thanks for some great fun, John. Have a wonderful birthday - and keep on jivin’!”

“Nuremberg one year, deep snow, the famous Jock Gordon in yet another drinking game, slammed down a drained shot glass onto the table to signify that, yes, he had drunk everything and more very quickly... only for the glass to shatter on impact and severely lacerate said Jock’s digit. Blood flowed copiously, stout men fainted, but Pete Manning and JD leapt into the breach and claiming Army Medical Training (Pete was in TA!) whisked Jock off by car into the snowdrifts to take him to the Military Hospital nearby. We carried on drinking.  Thankfully they made it there and back safely!”
